Do this, Don’t Do That

In June of 2018, I did a food sensitivity test through Everlywell – you know the one where they send you a kit, you draw some blood, and then send it back? The results were shocking, but crystal clear: I was going to have to change my diet. After seeing I had a HIGH intolerance for Brewers Yeast, Gluten, and Dairy, among things, it was recommended I try a Paleo Diet. I can do anything for 30 days, right? Right!

I quickly did a google search and found a great 2-week meal plan sample, and got started on my Paleo journey. It wasn’t too difficult, however it was time-consuming and expensive. The meals were packed with protein (which my husband loved) and pretty tasty too. I gave up all sugar and though it was hard at first, my meals were so large, I wasn’t feeling hungry, so I didn’t feel the need to eat the sweets I craved. Did the Paleo diet work? Truthfully, I’m not sure. I was feeling full, however, I was still extremely bloated and constipated. Something had to be causing this right?

Enter @lilsipper on Instagram. She was tagged in a Paleo story I was following, and shared her horror stories with IBS and how she overcame it. She openly shares what works for her and why, in her blog and IG posts. I started doing what she was doing: L-Glutamine, Slippery Elm, Bone Broth, Collagen, Nuzest Protein Powder, eliminated Stevia, stopped using probiotics, stopped eating raw veggies … BUT I was still playing a guessing game and spending more money than I probably needed.

Enter Dr. Smith, a functional doctor. Dr. Smith was able to run some blood and urine tests, which actually proved I was pretty healthy. What it showed was that I could use a little more Vitamin B and Magnesium. Because of my leaky gut, he upped the amount of L-Glutamine I was taking and added Colostrum, and a digestive aid. He also recommended Omega-3s. After 6 months, I continue to meet with Dr. Smith once a week, so he can check in on my gut, and also educate me on the supplements that work for me and why. We are still trying to figure out the constipation that just doesn’t seem to want to go away, but I do feel like I am digesting much better than I used to. I am no longer taking prescription drugs, which also helped my gut.

I will figure my body out, but it takes time. Baby steps.

The Journey Begins

Thanks for joining me! As many of you have shown an interest in my career and health, I decided the best place to share my experiences would be in a blog. In time, as I get more comfortable, this might convert into a YouTube channel of sorts.

The goal is to keep my posts short and simple. I fear if I babble too much, I might lose my readers. So for those of you who do not know me, let’s start with an introduction, shall we?

My name is Phyllis and I am the owner of Singing Lessons with Phyllis, LLC. A private music studio catering to all ages for voice, acting, piano, and sometimes even guitar. This however was not my full-time gig until August of this year, but that story will have to come in a later blog post, as it is much too long for just an introduction.

I am also a self-proclaimed wellness coach, which is what inspired me to start this blog. You see, to put it nicely, I have a leaky gut. This is something I have been brushing off for years, but recently decided to do something about. It has been a long few months, and is far from being over. At 40 years old, I have finally learned about my health and well-being. So much so, I want to share what has worked for me and what hasn’t through this blog.
